由于不同染料、不同助剂、不同织物的染整要求，所以废水中的pH值、CODCr、BOD5、颜色等也各不相同，但其共同的特点是BOD5/CODCr值均很低，一般在20%左右，可生化性差，因此需要采取措施，使BOD5/CODCr值提高到30%左右或更高些，以利于进行生化处理。

印染废水中的碱减量废水，其CODCr值有的可达10万mg/L以上，pH值≥12 ，因此必须进行预处理，把碱回收，并投加酸降低pH值，经预处理达到一定要求后，再进入调节池，与其它的印染废水一起进行处理。
